7 Mindfulness activities for the family

7 Mindfulness activities

Practicing mindfulness as a family can be a great way to foster strong connections and help everyone manage stress and emotions.

Here are some ways to get started:

  1. Family mindfulness meditation: Set aside a specific time each day for a family mindfulness meditation. This can be as simple as sitting together and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes. And honestly, if it’s going to cause more stress to try and do this every single day, rather start out with doing it once or twice a week and then you can gradually increase it as everyone becomes familiar with it.

  2. Gratitude practice: Encourage each family member to share something they're grateful for at dinner or before bed.

  3. Mindful movement: Engage in mindful movement activities together, such as yoga, or simply taking a mindful walk.

  4. Mindful breathing exercises: Teach children simple mindful breathing exercises that they can use whenever they feel overwhelmed or stressed.

  5. Sensory play: Engage in sensory play activities, such as playing with playdough, getting outside and feeling the grass under your feet, or listening to music.

  6. Storytelling: Encourage family members to share stories about their experiences, thoughts, and emotions. This can help everyone feel heard and understood.

  7. Mindfulness games: Play mindful games, such as "I spy", encouraging children to pay attention to their surroundings and be present in the moment.

It will help to approach these activities with an attitude of curiosity and playfulness and to make them fun and enjoyable for everyone. Practicing mindfulness as a family can be a wonderful way to build strong connections and support one another.
